American Idol: Simon Cowell vs Ryan Seacrest

If you've been tuning into American Idol this season, you might have noticed things getting a little awkward between host Ryan Seacrest and judge Simon Cowell.

In the episode that aired in Australia on March 17, which featured the top 12 singers performing hits by the Rolling Stones, Seacrest barged down to the judges' table and demanded that Cowell give a contestant more construction feedback.

Cowell was apparently not happy about what went down: in the next night's elimination episode, he publicly lambasted a very meek Seacrest for the "aggressive behaviour".

"Do you want my job?" snapped Cowell, who is leaving Idol at the end of the season to head a US adaptation of The X Factor. He continued: "Can we agree we don't cross the line? The eyeballing, the aggressive behaviour?... Just don't ever do that again."

The Washington Post's TV critic Lisa Moraes described the moment as "extremely uncomfortable" — but are Cowell and Seacrest really at each others' throats, or is it just all part of the act?

"[The feud] is all part of the show," Seacrest later said on his radio program. "Went to dinner last night [after the episode] — and I paid."

It's not often you hear a host admit that there's not a lot of reality in reality TV...

American Idol airs in Australia on FOX8.
